What are dental implants?

Dental implants are small titanium posts that are surgically inserted into your jawbone, where they serve as replacements for a missing tooth root. This enables the hard and soft tissue of your mouth to fuse to the implant in a process called osseointegration. Because they become a permanent part of your bone structure, a dental implant makes for a lasting, lifelike support system for a restoration such as a crown, bridge, or dentures. The end result is a tooth replacement that feels and functions exactly like your natural teeth.

When you come in for dental implants, Dr. Ennabi numbs the area surrounding your implant site with a local anesthetic. Next, he makes an incision in your gums to access your jawbone, drills a small hole in your jawbone and inserts the implant into your bone socket. Once your implants are placed, he sutures the incision site and sends you home while your gums heal and the implant fuses with your jawbone, which typically takes between 4-6 months.

Once you’re healed and the implant has osseointegrated, you come back for another appointment where Dr. Ennabi installs an abutment that will connect the implant to your restoration. After your gums have healed around your abutment, you come back for another visit where Dr. Ennabi finally places your crown, bridge, or denture. The entire process can take up to a year or longer but will leave you with a replacement tooth or teeth that look and feel just like the real thing.
